This is one of the most modern homes existing in the world today. The story of this amazing structure begins in the late 1950s with a young aerospace engineer by the name of Leonard Malin. Malin had received this property as a gift from his father-in-law but there was a big catch. Isn't there always? The slope of the hill was so severe it made the property unbuildable.
This limitation in construction only helped Lautner's genius to flourish. He drew a bold vertical line, a cross, and a curve around it. Then Lautner did what any established professional in his position would do, he made his intern draw it up. Today publisher Benedikt Taschen owns the Chemosphere and it has undergone a serious restoring. If you are ever north of Mulholland Drive near Laurel Canyon make sure to stop by this amazing architectural marvel. I'm sure Benedikt would be happy to give you a drink. Well, maybe not.
