Stylelust... Fashion, Architecture, Art, Music & Film

Picture 4

Am I going to the 2009 South by Southwest festival? No. Do I want to? Yes. I am a beggar and a chooser? Yes. So given the opportunity to attend the annual—and historically acclaimed—music, film and interactive weeklong festival, I would reside at the Hotel San Jose.

Off the beaten path is this luscious little design centric, art driven bungalow hotel in Austin, with what I assume are letterpress “do not disturb signs.” Stay in affordable European-style rooms with a shared bath or treat yourself to a petite suite with daybeds for lounging with some hooch before heading downtown. Or spoil yourself with a courtyard suite where you can personally experience the hotel’s community atmosphere. Such is the case with its 10th annual South by San Jose line up featuring intimate performances by SXSW performers.

If that’s not enough, or March isn’t your month, revel in what I would call the San Jose starving artist collection. Considering its contents, this might be the perfect destination for an artist’s retreat; visit the music library, video library, use a typewriter, camera, rent a bike, bring your dog, or grab a cup of java at Jo’s Coffee—located in the hotel parking lot. C’est la vie at Hotel San Jose. – Katy Ibsen

ACELOB1
The hip northwest hotel Ace chain has opened up in Palm Springs, converting a 1960's Howard Johnson motel into their new hip destination. The kids for Coachella will love the bohemian atmosphere. The facade is pure mid century with a nice touch of Portland and Seattle thrown into the interior. More on this hotel opening later in the week. -Michael Davis

The first Academy Awards ceremony was held on May 16, 1929. It was a quiet affair compared to the glamor and glitz that accompany the ceremonies of today. Since the winners were announced to the press on Monday, February 18, 1929 - three months early - the 250 people who attended the black-tie banquet in the Blossom Room of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel weren't anxious for the results to be announced. -Michael Davis

Palms
I am visiting Vegas for the fashion shows, Project and The Guild. I am staying for a second time at the Palms Place inside the luxury condos adjacent to the hip Palms property. I always like to stay at the Palms because it's a small casino and very comfortable and fashionable. The N9NE Steakhouse is also one of my favorites in Vegas.

The new property is ultra modern and the rooms are exquisite. Zebra wood tables and stainless appliances make this the place to stay if you want to feel like you live out of the pages of Metropolitan Home

The restaurant Simon is one of the best in Vegas for breakfast lunch or dinner. The sushi bar is fantastic and my dinner companions said that it was some of the best sushi they have ever feasted on. The decor is superb, the lighting is natural, and at night it sets the perfect mood. -Michael Davis

St_regis_bora_bora.
I'll admit it was the promise of full size Acqua di Parma bath products that drew me to the St. Regis Bora Bora, but it was the glass bottom overwater bungalows and beautiful scenery that made me return.  The St. Regis does luxury and romance better than anyone.  It all starts when they pick you up at the Bora Bora airport and whisk you to the property in a private speedboat.  Your luggage travels in its own boat and somehow arrives in your villa before you do.  The overwater bungalows are the largest in French Polynesia and perhaps the most beautiful.  At night the Milky Way sits low and directly above the resort that you think you can reach out and actually grab a handful of stars. While you're at it, reach out and grab your Valentine for there's no more romantic spot in the world to celebrate love than in this luxe tropical resort. Just ask Eva Longoria and Tony Parker who vacationed there while Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban honeymooned a few villas away. -Ricci DeMartino

Trisara5
When you want to spoil your loved one with a one-of-a-kind vacation in a beautiful villa on a secluded beach surrounded by attentive staff and delicious food, head straight to Trisara in Phuket.  In no time at all, you'll forget the 14-plus hour flight from LAX you just endured to get there. Trisara is one of the most beautiful resorts you'll ever experience and is the perfect spot for a romantic getaway because you never want to leave your room.  Maybe because your room is actually a self contained villa built on stilts with your very own, private infinity pool jetting out over the Indian Ocean.  In this setting, I dare you not to skinny dip at last once during your stay.  No need to worry about neighbors because the freestanding villas are far away from each other and the mature landscaping ensures your privacy.   When you had enough sunbathing, head to the luxurious spa for a couples massage or hibernate in your villa and order delicious Thai masterpieces from room service. For special pampering, order the private barbecue and the resort will send a personal chef, waiter, and crew to grill and serve dinner on your pool deck under the stars.   There's always lots of home made chocolate truffles in your villa to kickstart any romantic vacation, but be sure to place the stone "privacy angel" provided by the resort outside your door to let others know you're not to be disturbed...it is Valentine's Day after all. -Ricci DeMartino

Mondrian - SunsetLounge - outside

The Morgan's Hotel Group, rockstars in innovative hotel design, has just opened The Mondrian South Beach. With its fantastical interiors designed by Marcel Wanders, this property is the first of Morgans' properties to offer private residences with condo-hotel ownership. Located on trendy West Avenue, The Mondrian offers sweeping views of Biscayne Bay in a fairytale-like setting; Wanders envisioned the property as "Sleeping Beauty's Castle," and with their foliage-curtain cabanas, adult sandbox and chandelier-rainfall showerheads, to name just a few the stunning design details, all guests are immersed in the fantasy of a children's storybook.
