Faceless-LED-Watch

The Faceless LED Watch designed by Japanese designer Hironao Tsuboi is one of the most interesting timepieces I've seen in a long time. I'm ready for this product to be on the market and for me to get one from Japan. -John Sebelius

It is refreshing when someone can recognize they are a trainwreck and have fun with it. Bravo. -John Sebelius

Finding a choice piece of fine art to hang above the textured mantle or underneath a drop-hung French chandelier is no easy task. Yet Suzan Fellman, the Los Angels designer, seems to have captured a spotless-mind and filled it with the delicate rejuvenation of hallowed antlers.

Once a truck grill ornament or trophy of the big kill, Fellman honors these fossil-like treasures with Swarovski crystals or hipster colors found in her hand made collection. Capturing to the eye and coveted by art this connoisseur, these items punctuate a dull space yearning for a statement. –Katy Ibsen

Colbie Caillat has finally made a name for herself on the bigger stage but she began her career in coffee houses and small bars. Her alluring and gentle vocals hint at the fact that she is a woman of nature and will always have a strong connection with her home state of California. Everytime I hear her sing I want to grab my board and head to the ocean.  -John Sebelius

While there are several common threads that run through this exhibition, Localismo asks provocative questions:  What does it mean to capture the live event?  What are the implications?  How do we document the totality of the live performance?  How can one capture the movement, narrative, language of life and translate this into two-dimensional objects, such as film and video?

Each artist in Localismo wrestles with this complex task in unique ways, often challenging classical ideas of theatrical presentation by fragmenting the live experience into discrete performative elements.

What makes these four artists compelling vis-a-vis the exhibition title is the artists' interest in developing relationships with specific cultural localities such as New Orleans in Linzy's work, the Bronx barrio in Ortiz', the Latin machismo in Leonardo's and the richness of casting local talent in Newsome's. There is also a spirit of collaboration among several of the artists: Both Wanda and Shaun have been featured in several of Kalup's video's. Recently Kalup and Rashaad performed a double bill at The Kitchen in New York City this year. This collaboration functions at the level of the intimately social rather than the artificially curatorial in which artists are grouped together around abstract themes. It's a touchy subject I think. It's not a popular practice to group artists together based on a forced idea of common social or cultural identity. However in this case the grouping runs deeper. -Wayne Northcross

San Francisco men can now have a cocktail after work and a shave and hair cut. The MR Barber Shop is on trend in bringing back the old barber shop feel with a twist of adding a men's club/bar to the equation. -Michael Davis
